Approximately 13 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are caused by agricultural practices. From an environmental and economic point of view, gaseous N losses as well as nitrate leaching to groundwater play, a significant role. The aim of the present study is to analyze abiotic environmental effects of organic and conventional all-arable farming at a highly productive site in Northern Germany. The objective of this study was to compare the agronomic performance of different forage legume species submitted to different management systems, i.e. grazing, silage-cut and simulated grazing to find alternatives for white clover. Under conditions with wet mild winters due to high nitrate leaching risk growing systems with high nitrogen (N) uptake efficiency in autumn are necessary, especially after pre crops with a high N release. In 2003 and 2004 a field trial was conducted in Northern Germany to investigate autumn N uptake and nitrate leaching in autumn sown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) grown intercropped with catch crops. A two-year comparative study on the abundance of breeding birds on conventional and organic arable fields was carried out in Northern Germany (federal state of Schleswig-Holstein). Birds were surveyed on 40 pairs of fields (conventional/organic), which were selected with regard to similar field sizes and comparable boundary struc-tures (hedges, shrubs). Averaged over two experimental years, skylarks (Alauda arvensis) as well as pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) occurred more often on organic fields, while yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava) reached higher abundances on conven-tional fields. Begleitgrasart, Saatmischungsverhältnis, Etablierungsverfahren, Nutzungsart und -häufigkeit sowie Düngung lassen sich Ertrag, N2-Fixierungsleistung, Vorfruchtwert und Futterqualität von Kleegras in weiten Bereichen beeinflussen. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war die Analyse des Einflusses der Begleitgrasart auf Ertrag und Qualität von binären Rot- bzw. Several studies show that polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in red clover reduces proteolysis and increases nitrogen use efficiency of the ruminant, but not much is known about factors affecting PPO activity in red clover plants. PPO activity was analysed in red clover plants from legume-grass mixtures subjected to three different management systems. The cutting frequency (3 or 5 cuts) caused only minor differences in PPO activity, whereas a significant increase in PPO activity could be proved for the rota-tional grazing system (RG), compared to the simulated grazing system (SG, 5 cuts) with equal use frequency. Direct drilling of winter wheat in living mulches of white clover resulted in dry matter yields and forage quality of whole crop silage similar to wheat sown after ploughing. Grain yields, however, were lower in the intercropping system than in the sole wheat system. As wheat/clover “bicropping” caused very high grain yields of succeeding crops (oats, rye), it was concluded that the system allows to grow both cash crop and green manure crop in the same year and, therefore, might be a profitable alternative to otherwise common green manures in organic crop rotations. |

Ensilage of red clover results in lower concentrations of non-protein nitrogen compared to other forage legumes. It is assumed that the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in red clover is related to this effect. Therefore, a laboratory ensiling trial was carried out to quantify the changes in crude protein (CP) fractions during the ensiling process using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. In maritime climates the production of winter wheat often leads to high nitrate leaching losses. In this study mixtures of winter wheat and catch crops were analyzed as alternative growing system to avoid high leaching losses. In a field experiment pure winter wheat grown as control showed highest N-losses. Leaching losses of 140 kg N ha-1 after the pre-crop grass-clover and of 50 kg N ha-1 after oats as pre-crop were measured. Compared to this, growing winter wheat in mixture with forage rape or oats reduced nitrate leaching by 50 %. Aim of the presented study was the comparison of the specific emissions of CO2 equivalents of a legume based and a mineral N fertilised grassland considering the N2O emissions caused by N fertilisation and soil compaction. The field trial was set up on the experimental station “Hohenschulen” in northern Germany with the factors soil compaction, N fertilisation and experimental year. The N2O emissions were affected by an interaction of soil compaction and N fertilisation, especially under moist spring conditions.
